Scientific Studies At İstanbul Akvaryum Yielded Results: 4 More Baby Penguins Born! calendar_month 09.07.2024

Four more gentoo penguins were born at Turkey's national aquarium, İstanbul Akvaryum.... Weighing an average of 100 grams at the time of birth, the baby penguins are fed frequently throughout the day by their parents.

Hosting 17,000 land and sea creatures, İstanbul Akvaryum still contributes to the endangered penguin population which is gradually decreasing due to global warming, within the scope of the "Captive Breeding of Creatures Program".  Having achieved significant success in this field before, İstanbul Akvaryum has achieved a significant success in the international arena with the birth of 4 baby gentoo penguins. Born weighing 100 grams after an average incubation period of 38 days the baby penguins are fed frequently by their parents throughout the day have a very good health condition.

Dilek Çapanoğlu, the General Manager of İstanbul Akvaryum said:  "We adopted our first penguins in 2016 when their species had been under protection in Valencia Aquarium for 4 generations and our facility provided the appropriate conditions within the scope of the "Captive Breeding of Creatures Program". We have been providing for a long time, the best conditions for sustaining and protecting the generations of our penguins, whose population have decreased significantly worldwide due to global warming with our professional technical team and thanks to our technological infrastructure. The news about the birth of our 4 new baby penguins indicate that we have made a major contribution to the efforts to protect and increase the population of gentoo penguins worldwide." Ms. Çapanoğlu also added: "As İstanbul Akvaryum, we continue our efforts for conservation of biodiversity and sustainability without losing the pace. These achievements highlights the competence of not only our aquarium but also our country in terms of conservation of biodiversity and sustainability."

Data being provided for studies for the existence of the penguin generations

Operating in accordance with World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) standards, all the natural conditions required for the penguins of cold climate are provided at İstanbul Akvaryum, Fed with fresh food, the penguins are periodically monitored and they are taken care of by professionals who have received special training in this field. Data is provided for scientific research and sustainability studies around the world for the existence of the penguin generation by the way of the cameras recording 24 hours a day.
